On Page SEO

On page SEO is everything to do with how you enhance your websites pages to rank better in search engines such as Google. They are called on page because you are editing and refining the content and coding on your pages of your website. The following lists optimizing your online page SEO.

  1. Having your main keyword in your URL
  2. Keyword in heading title (also put in meta description and meta keywords although less relevancy)
  3. Keyword in page title, post title
  4. Header tags 1,2,3 have your keyword
  5. Keyword density of approx 3% there are differentiating thoughts on keyword density % but I go with 3%. This means for every hundred words, your keyword is there three times this factor does have very little relevance though.
  6. Keyword prominence try and put your keyword at the top of the page in the first paragraph near the start
  7. Bold, Italicize and Underline your keyword (not all of them, and only do one of the formats per keyword don’t bold, italicize and underline the same keyword
  8. Keyword in links to other pages this is called an Anchor Link, when your keyword is the link (instead of writing www. or click here)
  9. Only outbound link your keyword to good relevant sites do not link to bad sites
  10. Add you keyword to your images using ALT Text. Make sure the keyword you enter relates to the picture!
  11. Domain age older the site can result in higher authority when all else is equal

BAD On Page SEO

  1. Don’t use text presented as an image search engines can only read the ALT Text of an image, and therefore can’t read the graphic text
  2. Over optimizing for a keyword can get you penalized. Don’t keyword stuff or use more than one H1 tag
  3. Don’t link to rubbish sites
  4. Excessive cross linking across sites owned by the same person with same IP address
  5. Taking copyright images and being reported
  6. Static sites respond slowly to ranking changes dynamic sites quicker
  7. Flash search engines can’t read flash bad for search engine positioning

Off Page SEO

Off page SEO is everything you do to get your rankings increased in search engines off your website. The following lists optimizing your Off page SEO

  1. Page Rank (PR) although in saying that, sites with a page rank 0 can list higher in the search results than a site with a page rank 3 (for example sakes)
  2. Total incoming links (known as backlinks)
  3. Having incoming links from relevant high PR sites
  4. Anchor text of inbound link to your site
  5. Authority of referring links site expert site = good
  6. Get your site listed in DMOZ (very tough) and Yahoo (approx $299 per year)
  7. Having links from old, stable sites
  8. Buy your domain for longer term rather than one year, buy 5-10 years

BAD Off Page SEO

  1. Link buying if caught this can be bad stay away
  2. Traffic buying don’t buy traffic it will be rubbish from dodgy sources
  3. Cloaking having a page displayed for search engines and a page for the user
  4. Linking from bad neighborhoods/sources
  5. Rank sabotage by competitors having your content ripped off or having traffic bought on behalf of a jealous competitor watch out
  6. High Bounce rate how long someone is staying on your site. Vacating quickly results in high bounce rate which means the searcher is not finding what they wanted on your site

These factors cover a wide range of good and bad on and off page SEO. Most business owners who have websites are doing none of this, and therefore, by educating yourself with this knowledge you can go out there and start getting your website ranked in the search engines.
